What is Christian Worship?

What is the meaning of Christian worship?

by Ed Beidleman

Worship should be the paramount function of the believers’ lives. God has created us to be worshipers of Him, but on a voluntary basis. If He compelled us to worship Him, it would not be true worship. Worshiping our Lord and Savior is more a motivation by our love for Him. Webster’s Dictionary says: “Worship is to have intense love or admiration for; idolize”.

As believers there should not be an effort to worship Him, whether on a daily basis or when we come collectively on Sunday morning. Worship is a biblical command:

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. (Romans 12:1)

So, we must worship “in spirit and in truth” as mentioned in John 4: 23-24.

But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

Worshiping has to do with our sincere being and requires several things. First, we must be born again. Without the Holy Spirit residing within us, we cannot respond to God in worship because we do not know Him. In Corinthians 2:11, Apostle Paul says: “No one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God”. The Holy Spirit within us is the one who energizes worship because He is in essence glorifying Himself, and all true worship glorifies God.

Negatively, there is a second reason why we should search the Scriptures on the subject of worship. It is because of the severe consequences of false worship. Cain’s sacrifice was rejected by God because it was false worship (Genesis 4:5). Misdirected worship was the cause of untold hardship and suffering in the Old Testament. In the first chapter of Romans, Paul wrote that God was justified in condemning man because he worshiped in error.

I can remember reading of Russian Christian believers meeting in the middle of a forest in the freezing winter to worship. Many Christians in a number of countries worship under penalty of death if caught, and yet they do so because they love the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us have the same determination in our worship of the Lord who sacrificed Himself for us.
